UNDATED (WTVB) - Last weekend, seven suspected drunk drivers were arrested in Branch County. What would that number have been if the allowed blood alcohol limit were point-05 rather than the current BAC of .08. The debate will intensify after the National Transportation Safety Board yesterday recommended that DUI standards be tightened to point-05 percent.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving welcomes the new federal push. All 50 states currently have a limit of .08. The Michigan Licensed Beverage Association Tuesday said it believes the NTSB recommendation is misguided and would create an unnecessary fear in responsible consumers. It suggests the focus should instead be on repeat offenders and those with a blood alcohol count of .10 or higher. MADD National President Jan Withers calls the reduction a step in the right direction, but says the advocacy group would rather eliminate drunk driving entirely.
MADD is pushing for new technology to prevent convicted drunk drivers from operating a vehicle in the first place.
