The Tigers couldn’t finish off Houston yesterday afternoon with the Astros avoiding a season sweep with a 7-5 win over Detroit to wrap up a 3-game series at Comerica Park.
The Tigers had taken 6 straight from Houston this year but the Astros broke a 5-5 tie with two runs in the top of ninth and then had to sweat it out when Miguel Cabrera flew out to the wall in deep right field with the bases loaded to end the game, missing a grand slam by just a couple of feet.
Al Albuquerque took the loss after issuing a leadoff walk to open the final frame. Avisail Garcia hit a three-run shot for his first major league homer and Matt Tuiasosopo went 3-for-3 with an RBI for the Tigers, who now head to Texas for a 4-game series beginning tonight against the Rangers. Detroit’s 22-and-16 record leaves them with a half-game lead in the American League Central over Cleveland.
The White Sox beat the Twins 9-to-4 Wednesday afternoon at Minnesota while the Cubs downed the Rockies 6-to-3 last night at Wrigley Field
