Coldwater hosts baseball and softball invitationals Saturday, Bronson captures softball crown

COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - The Coldwater baseball team came up just short Saturday afternoon, falling in the championship game of their Stout and Sons Memorial Tournament. The Cardinals opened the day with a 8-6 win over Carleton Airport. Skyler Reinke was the winning pitcher, with Jacob Fielding getting the save. Brandon Lewis went 3 for 3 with 2 singles, a double, and 3 rbi. Coldwater won the second game on the 5 inning mercy rule over Ferndale 10-0. Jordan Butler was the winning pitcher. Skyler Reinke went 4 for 4 with 2 singles, a double, a triple, and 5 rbi. The Cardinals dropped the championship game to Portage Northern 5-3. Jacob Fielding took the loss in relief. Ryan Mock went 3 for 4 with an rbi. Coldwater is now 15-11, and they’ll play their final SMAC East doubleheader tomorrow at Sturgis. Our broadcast coverage begins at 5:30 pm.

Bronson also played in the Stout and Sons tournament Saturday, beating Portage Northern 1-0 in their opener, as Ryan Hagen pitched a no-hitter, with 3 walks and one strikeout. Blake Fox had the lone rbi. Eastside beat Bronson in their second game 7-2. Mark Robinson and Ryan Hagen had rbi’s, while Kyle Smith went 2-3. Carleton Airport topped Bronson in the final game 14-3, as Blake Fox took the loss on the mound. The Viking’s record is now 12-13-1 on the season.

The Coldwater softball team hosted an invitational Saturday. They dropped their first game to Decatur 8-6. Kattie Ness took the loss in relief. Morgan Howard had a home run, single, and 3 rbi. Ness started the second game and took the loss as Coldwater fell to Gull Lake 3-2. The Lady Cardinals are now 14-13 on the season.

Bronson won the invitational, beating Decatur in the championship game 13-2. The winning pitcher was Skyler Sobeski. She also went 2-3 at the plate with a single and double. Lindsey Sikorski was 3-3 with 2 singles and a double. Sobeski also got the win in the opening game, as Bronson beat Gull Lake 7-0. Liz Baker was 2-3 in that game, with 2 singles. The Lady Vikings are now 25-3 overall.

The Coldwater girls varsity soccer team conceded a late goal and ended up with a 1-1 tie at Adrian Saturday afternoon. Kaitlyn Vella got Coldwater on the board 8 minutes into the game, with the assist from Mackenzie McGuire. While dominating play the rest of the way, the Lady Cardinals couldn’t score again. Adrian got their lone goal with 3:30 left in the game to gain the tie. Coldwater outshot Adrian 15-5 on the day, with Mina Wellet making 2 saves in goal. The Lady Cardinals record is now 8-6-3 on the season. They’ll host Mattawan tonight in the second round of the SMAC Silver Division Tournament. The JV action starts at 5 pm, with the varsity at 6:45 pm.  The JV team improved their record to 12-1 on the season Saturday with a 2-0 win over Adrian. Megan Equia had a goal and Allison Germann had a goal and an assist. Maggie Pool and Megan Hoath combined for the shutout without needing to make a save, as the JV Cards outshot Adrian 19-0.

Also on the soccer schedule today, Quincy has a chance to wrap-up the Independent Soccer League West Division championship with a win at Jonesville. In golf, the second half of the SMAC league tournament for Coldwater will be held at Island Hills.
