Coldwater baseball and softball teams split doubleheaders at Sturgis in final league action

COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - The Coldwater baseball and softball teams finished their conference seasons on the road last night, and each earned a split in their doubleheaders with Sturgis. The Cardinal baseball team, in action you heard live on the radio last night, took the opening game against the Trojans 6-3 behind the complete game 4 hit pitching of Skyler Reinke. He also went 2 for 4 at the plate with a double. Grant Maurer was the losing pitcher in the second game, as Sturgis won 11-2. Kelvin Miller had a pair of singles in that contest, as Coldwater finishes 7-5-2 in league play, with their record now 16-12-3 overall.  They’re scheduled to be at Edwardsburg this afternoon.  The Coldwater JV team also split their baseball doubleheader, winning their opening game against Sturgis 14-6. Jordan Butler was the winning pitcher with 9 strikeouts. Sturgis shutout Coldwater in the second game 5-0.  Randall Linton took the loss as the JV record is now 16-16.

Bronson split their doubleheader with Mendon, losing the first game in a slugfest 21-17. Chase Carpenter had 2 triples, a home run, and 7 rbi. Bronson took the second game 9-6. Daniel McMichael was the winning pitcher, as Bronson is now 13-14-1 overall and 5-6-1 in league play.

Quincy dropped their doubleheader against Homer 14-3 and 17-2, as their record in the Big Eight  falls to 8-6.  They’re 13-10 overall. Tyler Powell and Bryce McCavitt were the losing pitchers for the Orioles last night.

Union City claimed a share of the Big 8 title with Homer by sweeping Reading 11-3 and 11-1. Brady Johnson picked up the win in game one with 15 strikeouts. Emmet Fraley was the winner in game 2 with 10 strikeouts, as the Chargers improve to 12-2 in the Big Eight and 22-6 overall.

In softball, Coldwater took their opening game against Sturgis 4-0 as Jessica Becks tossed a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts.  Kendall Galloway and Payton Watson each had doubles. Kattie Ness was the loser in game 2 as Sturgis won 7-6. Morgan Howard and Michaela Gillette each had 2 hits. The Lady Cardinals finish the league season at 10-4. They’re 15-14 overall, and will play at Parma Western tomorrow.

Bronson swept their softball doubleheader against Mendon 6-1 and 6-3. Skyler Sobeski threw a no-hitter in the opening game with 2 strikeouts. She also had a triple at the plate. Bronson is now 27-3 overall and 8-0 in the conference.

Homer swept a doubleheader in softball over Quincy 14-10 and 10-0.  

 On the schedule for today is the final game of the SMAC Silver Division tournament for the Coldwater girls soccer team, as they’ll host Sturgis.  Because of Senior Scholarship Night at the high school, the varsity game will be played at 5 pm, with the jv to follow at 6:45 pm.  Quincy also plays at Manchester in an Independent Soccer League crossover match-up of division  winners.  The Big Eight conference track meet involving Quincy and Union City will be held at Springport, with the St Joseph Valley league meet at White Pigeon. The Coldwater golf team will compete in the Urshalitz Invitational at the Cascades Golf Course in Jackson, and the SMAC Middle School track league meet involving Coldwater’s Legg Middle School will be hosted by Sturgis.
