COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - As soon as the last school rings for the school year, Coldwater’s Legg Middle School will be under construction. In the last two years the 6th grade and 8th grade wings of the building have undergone extensive renovation, as has the exterior of the building and the front driveway and parking. The 7th grade wing, along with the main office, cafeteria, and adjacent bathrooms, will be remodeled this summer. The district is also moving ahead with replacing lights at the high school football, baseball, and soccer fields. Because there currently isn’t enough money in the district’s sinking fund to pay for all of the work this year, the Coldwater school board this week approved a loan agreement with Southern Michigan Bank and Trust to finance the work. That loan will be paid back when more money comes into the sinking fund over the next five years.
The school board this week also bumped up the prices for lunch and breakfast provided by Chartwells, the district’s contracted food service company. Federal regulations require the district to charge enough to ensure sufficient funds are provided to the district for breakfast and lunches served to students not eligible for free or reduced meals. The price of meals will be going up 10 cents each for the 2013-2014 school year.
On the employment from, the board also voted to approve a three year employment contract for current Superintendent Dr Tina Kerr, beginning July 1st, with no increase in salary. Officially hired as the new Coldwater High School varsity volleyball coach was Larry Knauss, the longtime junior varsity coach, and Talia Rybek was hired as the district’s new 6th through 12th grade vocal music instructor.
