The Tigers held on yesterday to get past the Pirates 6-to-5 in the opener of a 2-game set at Comerica Park. Jhonny Peralta finished 4-for-4 with three RBI’s for Detroit while Justin Verlander struck out a season-high 13 batters while giving up three runs over seven innings as he upped his mark to 6-and-4. Jose Valverde closed it out for his sixth save.
The Tigers improved to 29-and-20 and they have a 2-and-a-half game lead over the second place Indians in the American League Central. Rick Porcello starts tonight for Detroit and then the Tigers play the Pirates in Pittsburgh tomorrow night and Thursday night.
