Coldwater gears up for MHSAA football playoff game tonight

COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - The state football playoffs open tonight across Michigan including the Coldwater Cardinals taking on the Stevensville-Lakeshore Lancers at Lakeshore. It’s the new kid on the block with Coldwater coming off its first winning season since 1989 for its first ever appearance in the division playoffs against a Lakeshore team that has made the MHSAA playoffs sixteen straight years. Coldwater is the third seed in the Division 3 Region 2 bracket with a 5-and-4 record while the second seeded Lancers finished at 6-3.

Tonight’s pre district playoff game kicks off at 7 o’clock and we’ll have live coverage of all the action on the radio with the broadcast on AM 1590 and FM 95.5 beginning at 6:30 with the audio also streaming on line at wtvbam.com. The other region two pairing for tonight features top seed St. Joseph hosting Sturgis, which like Coldwater, has a 5-and-4 mark, compared to St. Joseph’s 8-and-1 record.

The Cardinals are the only Branch County team to qualify for second season play but there’s no shortage of schools in the surrounding area that will be suiting it up this weekend with the goal of advancing to Ford Field and the finals at the end of the month. The playoff roster includes 4 teams each from the SMAC East and the Big Eight Conference with one of tonight’s games a Division 7 Big 8 matchup with Reading at Homer.

Elsewhere in high school sports, last night in volleyball, Bronson had a 1-and-1 record in a quad meet at Sturgis with a 3-0 victory over New Buffalo before losing 3-0 to Battle Creek St. Philip. This week’s coach’s poll has Bronson ranked sixth in Class-C with New Buffalo honorable mention while St. Philip is number one in the state in Class-D. Individual leaders last night for Bronson included Skyler Sobeski with 17 kills, Alexa Ratkowski with 58 assists and 6 aces, and Kassidy Bystry with 31 digs. Bronson plays tomorrow in the St. Joe Valley Conference tournament at Mendon. Coldwater plays at the SMAC volleyball league tournament at Portage Central Saturday.

Today on the Coaches Corner, it’s Coldwater football coach Jeff Schorfhaar.
