Coldwater and Bronson go for district volleyball titles this afternoon, MHSAA football playoffs continue

COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, it’s Championship Saturday in volleyball with a pair of MHSAA titles on the line today in the Coldwater Class B District and the Bronson Class C District. The Coldwater Lady Cardinals will try to make it 3 wins in this opening week of the state tournament when they host the Three Rivers Wildcats at five o’clock this afternoon. We’ll have the match on the radio with our live coverage on AM 1590 and FM 95.5 beginning at 4:45 and we’ll also stream the audio on-line at wtvbam.com. Coldwater reached the finals with 5 set victories over Sturgis and Vicksburg while the Wildcats advanced after a bye and a 3-1 semi-final victory Wednesday over Edwardsburg. Today’s winner moves on to Tuesday’s Regional semi-finals at Plainwell.

At Bronson this afternoon at 1 pm it will be a battle of number-one Mendon against the sixth-ranked Lady Vikings. It’s their fourth encounter of the year with the Hornets out to make it a sweep. In regular season St. Joe Valley Conference play, Mendon took a 3-1 victory at Bronson and then held on for a 5-game decision at home before defeating the Lady Vikings 3-0 a week ago today in the league tournament at Mendon. This afternoon’s survivor heads to Tuesday’s regional at Adrian Madison.

The second weekend of the MHSAA football playoffs kicked off last night and more district titles will be decided this afternoon. In Friday night action, in the Division Two showdown of undefeated SMAC Division champions, the West whipped the East as Portage Central beat visiting Battle Creek Lakeview 40-7. In Division Three, Stevensville-Lakeshore, which ended Coldwater’s season last week with a pre-district win over the Cardinals, stayed on the road to Ford Field with a 31-21 victory at St. Joseph. Elsewhere last night, in Division Four, Pennfield was a winner at home over Dowagiac 35-21. In Division Seven, Big Eight Champion Homer advanced to the Regionals with a victory over visiting Lawton 43-25. In Division Six, Constantine was on the road and they crushed Hillsdale 56-14 while Schoolcraft got by Watervliet 28-26. And in Division Five, at Olivet, the Eagles defeated Parchment 20-6. This afternoon’s schedule includes Climax-Scotts at Mendon in Division Eight while in 8-man football, it’s Lawrence at Battle Creek St. Philip.
