COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - It’s Veterans Day weekend 2013 with some ceremonies already held yesterday in Branch County and more on tap for today as well as on the actual observance of the day on Monday the 11th. At a special program Friday at the H & C Burnside Senior Center in Coldwater, the featured speaker was Women’s Marine Corps reservist Peggy Diffenbaugh, a 1940 graduate of Jonesville high school who served during World War Two. The 91-year old Diffenbaugh’s comments included her telling the audience she has a vision of someone developing a banner that can be fastened to the flag pole beneath the stars and stripes that says in bold letters, one nation under God. Diffenbaugh reflected that we send our young men and women to far off lands to fight for freedom and peace in the world when right here at home it seems we are losing it.
This afternoon, Coldwater Boy Scout Troop #433 is conducting a flag retirement ceremony at Oakgrove Cemetary at one o’clock. The community is invited to attend and may bring their American flags to the event for a respectful retirement for those no longer fit to be flown in public. It will include the first usage of a flag crematorium built with the assistance of troop members as a community service project and also made possible with local business donations and individual gifts.
