Coldwater and Bronson drop volleyball district final matches, winter sports tryouts begin this week

COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - The high school volleyball seasons for Coldwater and Bronson came to an end Saturday as they each lost in the championship matches of the MHSAA district tournaments they hosted last week. In Division Two at Coldwater, in a match we had on the radio, the Lady Cardinals fell in 4 games to Three Rivers, 22-25,25-22,13-25,18-25. Our McDonald’s Player of the Match for Coldwater was junior Ashley Chase, who stayed on the floor throughout every game and had 10 digs and 5 blocks. Shelby Bowers also had 5 blocks. Kenzie Galloway had a team-high 13 kills while Michaela Gillette led the way in digs with 12 and Meghan Schorfhaar had 22 assists. Coldwater finished the season with a 25-17-8 record. Three Rivers advances to tomorrow’s regional semi-finals at Plainwell.

In Class-C at Bronson, it was also a four game loss for the 6th-ranked Lady Vikings as they were eliminated by top-ranked Mendon 14-25,18-25 25-21,15-25. The Hornets went 4-and-0 this season against Bronson. Mallorie Bassage had a team-high 12 kills for the Lady Vikings. Kassidy Bystry had 30 digs and Alexa Ratkowski had 33 assists. Mendon will take on Big 8 champion Concord Tuesday in the Regional semi-finals at Adrian Madison.

The fall high school sports season for Branch County teams came to a close with the Coldwater and Bronson losses on Saturday. The transition to the winter season activities includes today’s opening tryouts and practices for girls basketball while it’s a week from today for boys basketball and wrestling. Gymnastics practice for Coldwater started two weeks ago.

The football playoffs and the road to Ford Field in Detroit for the Thanksgiving weekend championship games will continue this week with the Regional finals on Friday and Saturday. District title winners this past weekend included Stevensville-Lakeshore, which ended Coldwater’s season the week before last in the pre-district first round action. Also moving on to the regionals are Big Eight champion Homer as well as Pennfield, Constantine, Schoolcraft, Olivet, and Mendon. Today on the Coaches Corner, it’s Coldwater volleyball coach Larry Knauss.
