PHOENIX, AZ (WTVB) - Jimmie Johnson is in the driver’s seat to secure a sixth Sprint Cup Series championship following his third place finish Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway. It extended his lead to 28 points over Matt Kenseth and Johnson needs only to finish 23rd or better in this coming weekend’s season-finale at Homestead to win the Chase for the Cup.
Kevin Harvick took the checkered flag in yesterday’s AdvoCare 500, leaving him just 34 points out of the lead and in contention. Carl Edwards ran out of fuel on the final lap, allowing Kasey Kahne to finish second while Dale Earnhardt Jr. was fourth and Kurt Busch fifth. Kenseth wound up in 23rd place.
