High school sports: girls basketball tryouts continue and volleyball regional semi-finals on-tap tonight

COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, it’s break time for varsity competition with the end of the fall season for county teams coming with the losses on Saturday for Coldwater and Bronson in the volleyball district finals. The winter schedule starts up 3 weeks from today with the beginning of the girls basketball season. The first day for tryouts and practices for girls basketball in Michigan was yesterday. Practice for boys hoops and wrestling begins next Monday.

The MHSAA volleyball state tournament regional semifinals are tonight while the football playoffs will continue with the regional finals on Friday and Saturday.

Today on the Coaches Corner, we’ll have a final look at Quincy volleyball with coach Sandy Turner.

In middle school sports yesterday, in boys basketball, Coldwater split their 4 games with Marshall. In the eighth grade action at Marshall, in the “A” game, Coldwater beat the Redhawks 40-33. Ryan Gibson had 15 points, Brady Beckhusen had 10 points and Joe Severn added 8 points and a team-high 5 rebounds. Marshall won the “B” game 32-16. Vito Barone had 5 points and 4 steals for Coldwater. In the seventh grade contests at Coldwater, the Cardinals dropped the “A” game 23-19 with 7 points for Gage McGuire and 5 rebounds for Ryan Murphy. The Cardinals downed the Redhawks in the “B” game 25-19 with 12 points and 5 rebounds for Michael Kubel. Also yesterday, Bronson earned a split at home against White Pigeon. In the eighth grade game, White Pigeon beat the Vikings 24-18. Courtney Salesman had 12 points for Bronson. The Vikings won the seventh grade game in overtime 39-34 with 13 points for Brett Sikorski and 10 rebounds for Brady Gest.
