COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - Record breaking numbers are being reported for this year’s Plant A Row for the Hungry Project in support of the Branch Area Food Pantry. A 900 square feet garden expansion combined with extending 6 more weeks to the growing season saw vegetable deliveries total 6,143 lbs, a 33% increase over last year. The produce donation over 6 years is more than six tons at 28,646 pounds with an average cost for these vegetables in season at a dollar a pound. All costs have been covered by friends of the garden and support from various businesses, clubs and grants.
The Community Garden acknowledged F. Raker and Sons of Litchfield for their generous donation of 306 cabbage, tomato, green pepper and marigold plants. that produced more than 13-hundred pounds of food. Rich Lown’s spud and onion patch produced 965 lbs. of potatoes and 335 lbs. of onions. And Bill Post’s corn crop yielded 940 lbs from the Branch Area Careers Center, which has allowed use of its land at no charge for the past 6 seasons.
The Food Pantry menu has been expanded to include broccoli, kohlrabi, spinach, cucumbers, cauliflower, eggplants, okra, pumpkins, squash, chives and sunflower seeds. The project received financial support from the Broadwater family and the Coldwater Area Garden Club as well as the community at large with volunteer time contributed totaling 859 hours.
