COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, with the fall season events finished for county teams and still about 3 weeks away from the winter season schedule to begin, we’re following a number of area teams still alive in MHSAA fall state tournament action including volleyball with the regional finals on tap for tonight. In Class-C, top-ranked Mendon, which won the Bronson District last weekend, has a match at Adrian Madison against the host Trojans while in Class-D, seven-time defending champion Battle Creek St. Philip takes on Athens at Kalamazoo Loy Norrix. And in Class-B, the Harper Creek Beavers of the SMAC East face Berrien Springs in the Plainwell Regional finals. The state football playoffs continue tomorrow and Saturday with Regional championship games.
Today on the Coaches Corner, we’ll check the Union City coaches lineup for the winter season and preview the December and early January schedules in boys and girls basketball and wrestling.
In middle school sports, yesterday in boys basketball, Coldwater played Springfield and won a pair of 8th grade games at home but dropped both seventh grade contests on the road. The Cardinals took the 8th grade “A” game 35-21 with 12 points for Brady Beckhusen and 5 rebounds for Ryan Gibson. In the “B” game, it was Coldwater 31 Springfield 28 with 13 points for Ethan Wiley and 8 rebounds apiece for Wiley and Adam Bailey. Porter Skidmore had 5 steals. At Springfield, the Cardinals lost the 7th grade “A” game 32-13 with 6 points and 4 rebounds for Ryan Murphy. In the “B” game, Coldwater lost 45-26 with ten points and ten rebounds for Michael Kubel. Also yesterday, Bronson won 2 games at home against Mar-Lee. The Vikings took the 8th grade contest 41-35 with 14 points for Courtney Salesman and ten points for Ethan Cossairt. Bronson won the seventh grade game 26-6 with eight points for Carson Stanton and 4 rebounds for Issac Tappenden.
