UNDATED (WTVB) - In high school sports, several area teams last night advanced in the state volleyball tournament by winning MHSAA regional titles and will play in next Tuesday’s quarterfinals. In Class-C, top-ranked Mendon beat host Adrian Madison 3-0 and will match up next week against 7th-ranked Schoolcraft, which won its own regional last night. In Class-D, seventh-time defending champion Battle Creek St. Philip moved on with a 4-set victory over 8th-ranked Athens at the Kalamazoo Loy Norrix Regional. St. Philip’s quarterfinal opponent will be fifth-ranked Hillsdale Academy. And in Class-B, the season ended last night for the SMAC East Harper Creek Beavers, who fell in 4 games to Berrien Springs in the finals of the Plainwell Regional. Battle Creek Lakevie lost to Haslett 3-0 in their Class A regional final. The volleyball Final Four at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek tips off next Thursday.
Round 3 of the MHSAA football playoffs are set for tonight and tomorrow when Regional titles will be decided. Stevensville-Lakeshore, which eliminated Coldwater two weeks ago with a Division 3 pre district win over the Cardinals, hosts Byron Center Saturday afternoon. Also tomorrow, Big 8 Champion Homer plays a Division 7 game at home against Decatur while in Division 8, Mendon hosts Muskegon Catholic Central. Other area schools still alive on the Road to the Finals in two weeks at Ford Field include Pennfield, Constantine, Schoolcraft, Olivet, and Portage Central.
