Michigan Secretary of State wants new rules for political ads

LANSING (WKZO) -- Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson wants to crack down on some of the attack ads that have flooded TV and radio in recent years.

Johnson is proposing a sweeping new disclosure rule requiring those behind "electioneering" ads be publicly identified in state campaign finance records.  Those are the ads that try to persuade voters that someone isn’t electable without using the words "vote for" or "elect," and often encourage people to contact a candidate with a specific issue.

A loophole in Michigan law means those ads don’t require campaign finance reporting.
