WASHINGTON, D.C. (WTVB) - West Michigan Congressman Fred Upton’s “Keep Your Plan" bill is headed to almost certain death in the U.S. Senate after passage in the House.
The Republican bill aims to allow people to keep their private health insurance plans if they have received cancellation notices, but would also allow the insurance companies to sell those policies to new customers. Democrats called the GOP bill a wolf in sheep's clothing which will actually undermine and sabotage the overall healthcare reform law; despite that, 39 Democrats crossed over to vote for the doomed bill Friday. White House Spokesman Jay Carney says even if it did pass in the senate, the President would veto.
President Obama wants insurance companies to voluntarily allow people with cancelled policies to retain those policies for another year.
