BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) - In high school sports, four ranked teams from the area will compete tonight in the MHSAA volleyball state tournament quarterfinals with the winners of those two matches advancing to the final four that tips off Thursday at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek. In Class-C at Delton-Kellogg, it’s top-ranked Mendon against number seven Schoolcraft while in Class-D at Litchfield, seven-time defending champion top ranked Battle Creek St. Philip takes on fifth ranked Hillsdale Academy. The winter sports season for county teams starts the week after next with girls basketball while yesterday was the opening day of practice for boys basketball and wrestling. Today on the Coaches Corner, we’ll set the coaches lineup for winter sports in Quincy and preview the early season schedules for the Orioles.
In middle school sports yesterday, in boys basketball, Coldwater split their four games with Gull Lake. In the eighth grade contests in Coldwater, the Cardinals’ eighth grade “A” team beat Gull Lake 35-30 with 12 points for Brady Beckhusen. Coldwater dropped the “B” game 38-13 with five points for Brady Snow. In the seventh grade action at Gull Lake, the Cardinals won the “A” game in overtime 25-23 with 10 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 blocks for Gage McGuire. Ryan Murphy had a team-high 5 rebounds along with 3 points. Gull Lake won the “B” game 34-26. Michael Kubel had 15 points while Mohammed Salem added 9 points and 7 steals.
