BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) - The pairings are set for the MHSAA volleyball state finals with just one area team still in the title chase for today’s four championship matches happening at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek. And the next to last weekend of the football season is here with fourth round playoff action featuring the state semi-finals on the road to Ford Field in Detroit and the finals next Friday and Saturday.
Yesterday’s volleyball semi-finals included top ranked Mendon bowing out in Class-C as the Hornets fell 3-1 to eighth-ranked Grand Rapids Covenant Christian. Today’s finals will find the hometown favorite Battle Creek St. Philip Tigers shooting for an eighth straight championship with their Class D title match against second ranked Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes.
There are three area football teams that hope to extend their seasons this afternoon. In Division Seven, Big Eight Conference champion Homer faces off against Detroit Loyola at Chelsea. In Division 3, Stevensville-Lakeshore, which eliminated Coldwater in first round pre-district play, takes on Zeeland West at Vicksburg. And in Division 2, SMAC West Champion Portage Central plays Muskegon at East Kentwood.
