Red Wings start new NHL season at home against Buffalo tonight

DETROIT, MI (WTVB) - The Red Wings this season hope to end their drought of 4 years of not playing in the Stanley Cup Finals and Detroit opens its schedule tonight playing at home against the Buffalo Sabres. This year, Detroit moves to the Eastern Conference and joins Buffalo, Boston, Florida, Montreal, Ottawa, Tampa Bay and Toronto in the new Atlantic Division.

Red Wings coach Mike Babcock says the players like the move from the West because they will get to play against four other Original Six teams, instead of just one. Babcock says his team is excited for the season, which will include the Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium and the Olympics in Russia.

The Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks raised their championship banner during a ceremony before last night’s 6-4 win over the Washington Capitals at the United Center.  The Blackhawks are looking to become the first team since Detroit in 1997 and 1998 to repeat as champions.
