DETROIT, MI (WTVB) - The Red Wings started strong last night against Buffalo and then hung on late for a 2-to-1 victory over the Sabres at Joe Louis Arena in the regular season opener for both teams. Mikael Samuelsson and Pavel Datsyuk scored within 40 seconds of each other for the Red Wings in the first period. The Sabres scored to make it a one goal game after Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard turned the puck over with 7:24 left in the third period. Howard stopped 19 of 20 shots on the night while Ryan Miller gave up both of the Red Wing’s goals on 34 shots to take the loss.
Detroit’s next two games are on the road, tomorrow night at Carolina and Saturday night at Boston.
