The captains for the Coldwater Cardinals and Loy Norrix Knights meet at midfield for the coin toss before their October 4, 2013 game.

UNDATED (WTVB) - Coldwater avoided a letdown following last week’s emotional Homecoming victory against Sturgis by posting a 42-6 win at Kalamazoo Loy Norrix. Like last Friday’s game, the Cardinals outgained the opposition on the ground - 394 yards to 72 for the Knights. Cooper Murphy led the way with 9 carries for 201 yards and 2 touchdowns, Bryant Garrett added 7 carries for 81 yards and a touchdown, and quarterback Luke Beckhusen had 6 carries for 44 yards and 2 touchdowns while going 1-for-4 passing for 31 yards, no passing touchdowns, and an interception. McDonald’s Players of the Game honors went to the starting offensive line that made Coldwater’s running game so successful: tackles Darrien Bradley and Logan Targgart, guards Joel Jepson and Scot Sours, and center Cody Truex. Defensively, Zach DeMeester had 11 tackles while Austin Sigel had 9. The Cardinals improve to 3-3 overall, 3-1 in the SMAC East as they prepare to visit undefeated Lakeview next Friday. The Knights, meanwhile, are still looking for their first win of the season at 0-6.

The annual cross-county Big 8 battle between Union City and Quincy was dominated by the host Orioles 54-7. Jimmy King had 15 carries for 118 yards and 3 touchdowns, while Jordan Weber had 8 carries for 118 yards and 2 touchdowns. Bryce McCavit led the defense with 13 tackles, while Jimmy Strock and Tristen Haylett had 10 apiece as Quincy improves to 4-2 overall, 3-2 in the Big 8. Union City, meanwhile, falls to 2-4 overall, 2-3 in league play.

Bronson fell to visiting White Pigeon 34-8. Daniel McMichael had 12 carries for 87 yards; he also threw a 20-yard TD pass to Ryan Hagen. Kyle Roberts had 9 tackles for the Vikings, who fall to 1-5 overall, 0-2 in the St. Joe Valley.

Tekonsha lost at Waldron 42-18 to drop to 1-5 overall, 0-4 in the Southern Michigan 8-Man Football League.
