OAKLAND, CA (WTVB) - The Tigers have advanced to the American League Championship Series for the third straight year. Last night, Justin Verlander fired eight shutout innings as Detroit blanked the Athletics 3-0 in the do-or-die Game Five of their AL Division Series in Oakland. Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer for the Tigers who will take on the Red Sox in Game One of the ALCS tomorrow night in Boston. Verlander had a no-hitter broken up with two outs in the seventh inning. He ended up allowing just two hits along with ten strikeouts. Joaquin Benoit allowed the tying run to come to the plate in the ninth but got a fly out to end the game.

23-year-old rookie Sonny Gray gave up three runs in five frames to suffer the loss. It’s the second straight year that Verlander shut down the A’s for a Game Five victory at Oakland. Verlander has owned Oakland in the playoffs with 30 straight scoreless innings versus the A’s, a postseason record against one team.

Anibal Sanchez will start Game One for the Tigers in Boston. Detroit went 4-and-3 against the Red Sox this year.

Game 1 of the National League Championship series is tonight in St. Louis with the Cardinals taking on the Los Angeles Dodgers at Busch Stadium..
