Fremont, IN (WTVB) - Authorities in Steuben County, Indiana said Friday afternoon it was a 13-year-old boy who died in a house fire near Fremont late Thursday night. The victim was identified as Augustus "Gus" Larson. He was an eighth grade student at Fremont Middle School. Larson died in the blaze which broke out just before midnight at the Mitchell and Crystal Larson residence at 6655 East 500 North.

Sheriff’s deputies said the Larsen family was asleep when an adult awoke to the smell of smoke. The family was alerted and started to exit the house as it was filling up fast with heavy smoke. A news release said the upstairs window to Gus's bedroom was broken out and it's believed he did not want to jump. Instead, he went back into the house to try and escape somewhere else. His body was found inside of the bedroom area.

The death has been ruled an accident following an autopsy which showed the teen died of smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Indiana State Fire Marshall’s office and the Sheriff’s Department.
