Quincy beats Union City in county volleyball match-up, Coldwater and Quincy soccer teams in district semi-finals today

QUINCY, MI (WTVB) -Tuesday night in high school volleyball, it was a county matchup of Big 8 teams at Quincy where the home team was a winner over Union City in five games. It was senior night for Quincy and honored in their final home appearance were Bailey Knaack, Ashton King, Andrea Ferrin, Jordan Kotwicki and Melissa Myers. The two teams last night traded wins in the first four games and then Quincy took the deciding fifth game 15-12. Gaby Masson had a team-high 22 kills for Quincy while Masson and Ali Silva each had 15 digs. Silva added 29 assists and Mackenzie Moore had 3 blocks. For Union City, Rachel Wing had 19 kills, Marissa Mead had 33 digs and Bailee White had 28 assists.

Yesterday in cross country, Quincy hosted the fourth and final Big 8 jamboree of the season. Quincy’s boys and girls teams each finished in second place yesterday while in the overall standings, the girls ended up in second place while the boys placed third. For Union City yesterday, the boys placed sixth while the girls took fifth place and they finished the same in the final league standings. In the individual results, in the boys race, for Quincy, Riley Horn placed fourth while Zach Slack was fifth and for Union City, Skyler Flanders finished in 19th place. In the girls race, for Quincy, Haley Bean was third and Katie Spalding seventh while for Union City, Katie Birch placed eighth. The top ten runners for the league season earned All-Conference honors. In the final individual boys standings, Quincy had a trio in the top ten with Riley Horn fourth, Zack Slack seventh, and Hunter Winger tenth. For the girls, for Quincy, Haley Bean was third and Katie Splading fifth while for Union City, Katie Birch was seventh.

Also in cross country, Bronson ran at a St. Joe Valley quad meet at Centreville with the boys team taking third place and the girls second. Finishing in the boys top ten for Bronson were Matt Cosby in third place with Wes Disbro in sixth place while for the girls, Corissa Ross placed fourth and Maryselva Hernandez was sixth.

On today’s high school schedule, there’s boys soccer state tournament district semi-final action. In Division Two, at the Gull Lake district, Coldwater has a 7 pm match against Vicksburg. The winner will face either Gull Lake or Battle Creek Central in Saturday’s 11 am district title match.  And in Division Four, at the Quincy District, the host Orioles have a 3 pm match today against Calhoun Christian followed by Jackson Christian vs. Hillsdale Academy. The District final is at 10 am Saturday. Elsewhere on today’s high school schedule, in volleyball, Coldwater plays at home against Sturgis while Bronson hosts White Pigeon. Today on the Coaches Corner, it’s Bronson football coach Dan Burzynski.

In middle school sports yesterday, in volleyball, it was a sweep for Coldwater in four matches at Gull Lake. The 8th grade “A” team won 2-0. Leading on the serving line was Darlene Horn with ten points including 4 aces. Isabella Foley had 6 digs, 5 assists and 4 kills. Jamie Wellet also had 5 assists. In the “B” match, which Coldwater took in 3 games, Chloe Altoft had 15 serves while Nicole Adams and Emily Foulk each had 4 assists and 4 blocks. In the seventh grade action, Coldwater won the “A” match 2-1. Malorie Rzepka had 8 serves with 3 aces along with 3 kills and 3 blocks. Jordan Clemens added 4 aces on 7 serves. Coldwater took the “B” 3-0 with 15 serve points for Hailey Steel and 14 for Morgan Beckhusen.
