ANGOLA, IN (WTVB) - The suspect charged in the stabbing death of another man last weekend in Angola claimed he acted in self-defense when he appeared Tuesday at his initial court hearing. 41-year-old Kenny Fletcher is being held without bond on a murder charge in connection with the slaying of 39-year-old Wilber Renshaw on Saturday night in the road in front of Fletcher’s house on North Washington Street. Fletcher told the court he was trying to protect family members when a fight broke out with the homicide victim. Authorities also indicated yesterday that there were text messages between Fletcher and Renshaw’s wife about 2 hours before the stabbing.
Renshaw was pronounced dead on arrival at Cameron Hospital. Fletcher fled the scene but surrendered Monday night at the Steuben County Jail. A pre-trial conference has been set for November 4th in Steuben Circuit Court with a jury trial on the docket for March 3rd.
Fletcher served time with the Michigan Department of Corrections after being sentenced in 1990 in Jackson County for assault with intent to commit murder. He was discharged from prison in the spring of 2011.
