ANGOLA, IN (WTVB) - It’s a worst case nightmare for utility and road repair workers, being in a hydraulic lift bucket and having the lift truck struck by a passing vehicle. It happened Thursday afternoon along I-69 in Steuben County west of Angola. Two men were working on the bridge over the interstate at County Road 325 West when a semi struck the bucket as they were removing support braces on the bridge. Sheriff’s deputies say the accident occurred along the southbound lanes of I-69 around 1:30 pm Thursday.
The injured workers were identified as Ted Cook of Marion and Brandon Morris of Columbia City and their bucket was bumped in the collision with the top corner of the semi’s passenger side. Cook managed to stay inside the bucket following the impact while Morris fell about 13 feet to the pavement. The truck driver from Indianapolis told officers he had reduced his speed for the construction area but failed to see the lift bucket. The trucker wasn’t cited.
Cook and Morris were admitted to Parkview Regional Medical Center with the Sheriff’s Department reporting them to be in serious to critical condition.
