AUDIO: Coldwater to play first ever football play-off game at Stevensville Lakeshore Friday night

COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - The Coldwater Cardinals are headed to the state football playoffs following their first winning season since 1989. The MHSAA playoff qualifiers and pairings were announced last night and Coldwater’s 5-4 record and strength of schedule earned the Cardinals a berth in the post season. Coldwater’s first round opponent is Stevensville Lakeshore with the Division Three, Region Two pre-district game set for Friday night at Lakeshore at 7 pm. We’ll have live coverage of the contest on AM 1590 and FM 95.5 and stream the audio on-line at wtvbam.com with our pre-game show beginning at 6:30.

The Cardinals finished the regular season Friday with a 54-27 win at Marshall. Coldwater qualified as the third seed in their Regional district with 54.556 playoff points. Lakeshore, with a 6-and-3 record, was an automatic qualifier as were all teams with six wins. The other Region 2 District 2 pre-district pairing has the fourth seed Sturgis Trojans and their 5-and-4 record facing number-one seed St. Joseph. The Cardinals earned one more playoff point than the Trojans in part because of Coldwater’s Week 5 34-14 homecoming victory over Sturgis. Coldwater played at St. Joseph in the both team’s season opener with the Bears beating the Cardinals 33-14.

Pre-game tickets for Friday’s Coldwater at Stevensville-Lakeshore matchup will be sold at the CHS Athletic office on Thursday from 7:30 am-4:00 pm and 7-8:30 pm and on Friday from 7:30 am-1:00 pm. Pre-purchasing a ticket does not guarantee a seat. It just saves you time from standing in line Friday night at Lakeshore, where the gates open at 5:30 pm. Seating is on a first come first serve basis with no reserved seats.

Coldwater is the only Branch County football team to make the playoffs. Area teams that earned a post season berth include half of the teams in the Big Eight, including conference champion Homer, along with Reading, Jonesville, and Springport.
