COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, in boy’s tennis yesterday, Coldwater scored a 7-to-1 conference victory at home over Gull Lake. The Cardinals are undefeated in early season play with a 2-and-0 league mark as well as their schedule opening win at the Vicksburg Invitational. Yesterday, it was a sweep in the singles for Derek Sammons, Nate Waterbury, Dylan Linklater and Kumaran Arivoli while also posting wins were Shane O’Grady and Austin Butler at second doubles, Keagen Dwyer and Nolan Duda at third doubles, and Austin Hodson and Kameron Miller at fourth doubles.
In the j-v action, Gull Lake was unable to field an entire team with just two players on hand and they were able to score a doubles win over the Cardinals. In a pair of exhibition singles matches between players from the Coldwater j-v team and the Gull Lake varsity, Sean Delaney was a winner for the Cardinals while Evan Henry lost in a tie breaker.
Yesterday in girl’s golf, Coldwater traveled to Marshall for the second SMAC East Jamboree and came away with a 3rd place finish. Marshall won the event with a 178, Lakeview was 2nd with a 186, and Coldwater was 3rd with a 202, followed by Harper Creek and Sturgis. Leading the way for Coldwater was Anna Wendorf with a 47, Jami Maxson carded a 50, Emma Dwyer had a 52, Cecelia Ward shot a 53 and rounding out the scoring were Kait Vella and Madison Zinn who both had 55's.
Coldwater's JV golf team traveled to Battle Creek's Cedar Farms golf course and took first place in the JV Jamboree. Coldwater's Kelsey Parrish tied for medalist honors with a 43, Haley Linton shot a 49, Madison Donbrock carded a 51, MacKenzie McGuire had a 59 and Emma Winter and Natalie Borden each had 61's.
Wednesday in cross country, Coldwater, Quincy, and Union City ran at the Springport Invitational with 31 schools split into three divisions. In Division One, Coldwater’s boys team finished fifth while the girls placed ninth. Medal winners for the boys were Spencer Leist in 13th place, Adam Clemens in 19th place and Josh Evers in 24th place. In the girls competition, Andrea Sowles and Josilyn Quimby medaled for Coldwater. In Division Two, Quincy’s boys and girls teams finished in second place while the Union City boys were fifth and the girls sixth. For Quincy, Riley Horn finished third overall, Zach Slack was fourth, Hunter Winger eighth and Jared Brown 24th. Medaling for the girls in fifth, sixth, and seventh place were Katie Spalding, Alyssa Bracy, and Kelsey Bean while Madde Horn took 15th place.
On today’s high school schedule, in boys soccer, it’s Coldwater at Marshall with the j-v match at 5 o’clock followed by the varsity at 6:45 pm. In volleyball, Union City plays at home in a tri-match with Colon and Climax-Scotts. In boys tennis, Coldwater has a match at home against Three Rivers. And in reserve football, Coldwater’s junior varsity and freshman teams play at Portage Northern. Also in j-v action, it’s Quincy at Concord, Bronson at Onsted, and Union City hosts Homer.
