COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - It turns out that 2013 won’t be the last year after all for the Heritage Park swimming pool in Coldwater. The pool shutdown was planned because of the anticipated opening a year from now of the Dr. Brown Aquatic Center. However, the timeline has changed in part because construction bids for the center as well as the Heritage gym expansion came in over budget, pushing back the start date for the project.
Coldwater City Manager Jeff Budd told the City Council at its meeting Monday night that he has put the word out to the staff for the Heritage Park Pool that they should plan on returning next summer. The Heritage pool has turned into an expensive operation and a budget burden for the city. However, funds to open it again in 2014 will be available because for now, the city won’t have to make its first annual $50,000 payment to the Coldwater School District, which will be the operations manager for the new aquatic center. In addition, Budd said there’s the $25,000 carry over with the funding that was in next year’s budget to run the splash park that is planned to replace the Heritage pool. He also told the Council that the large water slide for the Heritage pool has drawn some interest but it has not been sold.
