DETROIT, MI (WTVB) - Ndamukong Suh said Wednesday he is appealing the league’s decision to fine him $100,000 for a low block. The Lions defensive tackle spoke to reporters a day after being penalized for a block to the legs on Minnesota center John Sullivan during an interception return by Detroit linebacker DeAndre Levy in Sunday’s season opener. Suh was whistled for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after he hit Sullivan in the knees. Levy easily would have scored on the play without the illegal block. The Lions went on to win the game 34-24.

Suh will argue that the amount of the fine is excessive. If it’s upheld, it will amount to the largest fine in NFL history without a suspension involving lost pay. The penalty is based on the league’s system of escalating discipline and comes after Suh’s fine last year of $30,000 for kicking Houston quarterback Matt Schaub in the groin area. Detroit returns to action Sunday at Arizona. Week Two of the NFL season kicks off tonight when the New England Patriots host the New York Jets.
