CHICAGO, IL (WTVB) - The Tigers got hooked up in a pitcher’s duel last night in Chicago and Detroit was able to pull out a 1-to-0 win over the White Sox. Anibal Sanchez and three relievers combined for a five-hit shutout as the Tigers took the rubber game of the 3-game series. The victory allowed Detroit to increase their lead in the American League Central over the second place Indians to 6-and-a-half games after Cleveland lost to Kansas City. The third place Royals are 7 games out and they will be in Motown this weekend to face the Tigers, who have the day off today.
Sanchez last night struck out 10 while giving up the five hits and four walks over seven-and-a-third innings as he improved to 14-and-7 with his seventh straight win. Joaquin Benoit closed it out for his 18th save. Detroit was finally able to break the scoreless tie in the eighth inning thanks to a 2-out rbi single from Omar Infante.
Detroit had a 4-and-5 record on their 9-game road trip and on Friday will begin their final home stand of the season while facing the Royals, Seattle, and the White Sox.
The Chicago Cubs were blanked 6-to-0 Wednesday afternoon at Cincinnati as the Reds avoided a 3-game sweep.
