DETROIT, MI (WTVB) - The Tigers couldn’t get Max Sherzer his 20th win of the season but thanks to a pair of home runs from Alex Avila,Detroit beat Kansas City 3-to-2 yesterday afternoon at Comerica Park to take the rubber game of the 3-game series. The victory keeps the Tigers lead in the American League Central at 5 games over the second place Indians. Avila lifted a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie. He also connected on a two run shot in the second inning. Scherzer struck out 12 in seven innings of one-run ball for a no-decision.
Drew Smyly improved to 6-and-0 while Joaquin Benoit notched his 20th save. Tonight, Detroit continues its final home stand of the season, opening a 4-game series against Seattle.
