DETROIT, MI (WTVB) - The Tigers last night reduced their magic number to clinch their third straight American League Central title to seven as they beat Seattle 4-to-2 in the opener of a 4-game series at Comerica Park. Detroit now has a six game lead over second place Cleveland with 12 games to play. Torii Hunter and Omar Infante each went 2-for-4 with an RBI last night to help the Tigers win for the fifth time in six games.
Rick Porcello struck out ten over six innings of one-run ball and improved to 13-and-8. Porcello’s performance made it the Tiger’s 100th quality start of the season, the most in the majors. Joaquin Benoit locked down his 21st save in 21 chances for Detroit.
The Chicago White Sox coasted to a 12-to-1 win over the MInnesota Twins while the Chicago Cubs lost 6-1 at Milwaukee.
