BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) - Ousted Community Action Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macfarlane has begun a legal battle over her abrupt dismissal this summer. Macfarlane filed a suit in Calhoun County Circuit Court Tuesday charging that the CA board and its chairman violated whistleblower protection laws and the Open Public Meetings Act. The complaint statement included in a news release from Macfarlane’s attorneys alleges she “was fired in retaliation after she resisted personal instructions from board Chairman Terry Langston, who wanted her to cease investigations into a pair of incidents involving unsupervised children at two federally regulated Head Start daycare centers.”The suit also accuses the CA Board of holding a number of secret meetings without public notice.

The nonprofit Community Action is based in Battle Creek and provides housing, child-care, educational, transportation and nutritional services across a 4 county area including Branch, Barry, Calhoun and St. Joseph counties.
