CALIFORNIA TOWNSHIP, BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) - An alert neighbor helped a California Township man escape a fire that damaged his single wide mobile home yesterday afternoon in southern Branch County. The Fremont, Indiana fire department took the alarm that came in around 2:20 p.m. from 863 South Ray-Quincy Road. That’s where Robert Austin lives. He was asleep in the living room when the blaze started. An Amish man who lives across the road saw smoke and entered Austin’s residence, woke him up and got him outside.
The fire loss was confined to the living room but the rest of the home sustained significant smoke damage. The flames were quickly extinguished. Firemen were on scene for just over an hour. An older model smoke alarm at the other end of the structure from the living room was working but wasn’t loud enough to be heard by Austin. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
