Coldwater volleyball gets comeback win at Marshall, 5th ranked Bronson falls against 4th ranked Mendon

COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports last night, in volleyball, Coldwater scored a 3-2 comeback SMAC East victory at Marshall. The Lady Cardinals claimed the opening game 25-19 but dropped the next two 20-25 and 19-25 before taking out the Redhawks 25-20 and 15-11 to win the 5 game match. Kenzie Galloway led the front row with 12 kills while Meghan Schorfhaar had 10 digs and 20 assists. Coldwater now has a 2-and-1 conference mark with their overall record at 9-7-and-7. Marshall won last night’s j-v match 3-0. Naomi Blansit had 6 kills for Coldwater while Sammie Pool had 16 digs and Brianna Eddy had 7 blocks.

Also in volleyball, in a matchup of Class-C top ten teams, fifth-ranked Bronson fell at home to number-4 Mendon 3-games-to-1. The visiting Hornets handled the Lady Vikings 25-17, 25-22, 20-25, 25-21. Skyler Sobeski had 12 kills and 6 digs for Bronson while Jill Pyles had 5 blocks and Alexa Ratkowski added 30 assists.

Wednesday in boy’s tennis, Coldwater’s once-beaten, 10th-ranked Cardinals defeated visiting Portage Northern 8-to-0 in a SMAC West Crossover match. In the j-v action, the Cardinals beat Northern 3-1.

On today’s high school schedule, in boys soccer, it’s Coldwater at Pennfield with the j-v game at 4:30 and the varsity to follow at around 6:15. Also, Quincy has a 5:30 match at Jackson Christian. In volleyball, Union City hosts Parma Western. In girls golf, Coldwater plays in the Sturgis Invitational at Island Hills while in boy’s tennis, it’s Bronson at Battle Creek Central. Coldwater's varsity tennis team will finish a suspended match against Battle Creek Central, while the JV team will host Vicksburg. There’s reserve football action tonight including Coldwater with freshman and j-v games at Sturgis. Also on the j-v schedule, it’s Quincy at Athens, Bronson hosts Mendon, and Union City is at Springport.

Tomorrow, it’s a big night for varsity football in Branch County with homecoming contests in Coldwater, Quincy, and Union City. Today on the Coaches Corner, it’s Union City football coach Chris Davis.
