COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, Coldwater yesterday played their baseball and softball season openers at home against Battle Creek Central and the Cardinals cruised to victory with a pair of doubleheader sweeps over Central. In the baseball action that we had on the radio, it was Coldwater winning the opener 12-1 in five innings and the nightcap also was a 5-inning contest with a 13-0 shutout for the Cardinals. Our McDonald’s Player of the Game honors for Coldwater went to the two starting pitchers, Grant Mauer and Ian Wright. In game one, Mauer tossed one-hit ball over 4-innings with six strikeouts and 3 walks. At the plate, Brandon Lewis and Brendan Spangler each had doubles while Jeremy Harrell had a single and two rbi’s. In the second game, Wright held the Bearcats to one hit over 4-innings with 11 strikeouts. Mauer had 3 hits and 2 rbi’s, Lewis had an rbi double and Harrell added a triple and two rbi’s. Tomorrow afternoon, the team heads out on their annual spring break bus trip to Florida and then a week from Saturday on April 12th, Coldwater hosts their annual Southern Michigan Bank and Trust Invitational.

In softball, Coldwater yesterday totally shutdown Battle Creek Central, holding the Bearcats to no hits while taking both ends of the twinbill by scores of 15-0.  In the 3-inning opener, Jessica Becks was on the mound with 9 strikeouts and 2 walks. Michaela Gillette a triple and an rbi. In the 4-inning nightcap, Kattie Ness pitched a perfect game with 10 strikeouts.  Kenzie Galloway had 2 triples with 2 rbi’s.  Becks had 2 singles with an rbi while Ness had a triple. And Sam Dygert and Kendall Galloway each had a single in both games. Coldwater’s next softball action is Tuesday, April 15th at home against Gull Lake.

On today’s high school sports schedule, in varsity baseball and softball, it’s Quincy at home against Stockbridge. In girl’s tennis, Coldwater hosts Battle Creek Central, and in track, Quincy has a tri-meet at home with Sand Creek and Addison.
