QUINCY, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, Quincy opened its baseball season yesterday at home with a doubleheader sweep over Stockbridge 10-0 and 17-3. In the six inning opener, Tyler Powell tossed a one-hitter with 9 strikeouts and 1 walk. Bryce McCavit had a home run and double and 3 rbi’s. Jimmy Strock had a double and single and 2 rbi’s along with 4 stolen bases. Chase Cook added 2 hits and an rbi. In the five inning nightcap, Quincy broke it open by scoring 15 runs in the second inning. McCavit picked up the victory on the mound, going the first three innings while Cook finished up. Jake Jodway had 2 hits and 4 rbi’s. McCavit had 2 hits and 2 rbi’s, Tristin Haylett had 2 hits including a double and 2 rbi’s. Jake Rider also had 2 hits and an rbi.
Yesterday in girls tennis, Coldwater earned a 5-3 victory at home over Battle Creek Central. Coldwater won at first, second, and third singles with Madison Zinn, Emma Grife, and Emma Dwyer along with Karissa Harrell & Sadie Youse at first doubles and Ally Vanstone & Sabrina Machida at second doubles. The Lady Cardinals also took the j-v match 5-1. Alyssa Bowen, Brooke Lafferty and Katie Kanouse won at first, second, and third singles while Hannah Johnson and Next Panyakorn won at second doubles with the fifth point coming by default at third doubles.
Wednesday in track and field at Quincy, the Orioles boys and girls teams each scored a pair of victories in a double dual meet with Sand Creek and Addison. In the boy’s action, it was Quincy over Sand Creek 97-40 and they beat Addison 74-63. The Orioles’ Michael Peterson swept the shot put and discus events. Riley Horn also was a double winner against both opponents in the 16-hundred and 32-hundred meter runs. Against Sand Creek, Tanner Parshall finished first in the Long Jump and the 100, 200, and 400 meter dashes and also took the 400 meter dash against Addison. In the girls meets, Quincy defeated Sand Creek 100-28 and downed Addison 73-58. Kayla Hayes and Kayti Hawkins won the shot put and discus against both teams, Andrea Ferrin took a pair of wins in the 100 meter dash, as did Alyssa Bracy in the 32-meter run.
Just one event on today’s Branch County high school sports schedule, in varsity girls soccer, depending on the weather and field conditions, it’s Coldwater at Quincy in the annual “Battle of the Birds” match at 5:30 pm. It would be the season opener for both teams.
