COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - The fix happened quicker than predicted. A section of northbound I-69 in Branch County’s Girard Township between Dayburg and Girard roads is open again. It was shut down for about 12 hours yesterday because of a washout near the shoulder along the right-side driver’s lane of the highway. The Michigan Department of Transportation said crews noticed the sink hole early Thursday afternoon.
They figured it wouldn’t be until sometime later today that the repairs would be finished, but the hole was filled and the job completed around 2 this morning. M-DOT said the recent rain including Thursday’s heavy showers along with snow melt in that area of the highway where utility lines were placed under the interstate were responsible the washout. They don’t believe it’s eroded beneath the interstate and the shutdown of the one mile section was done as a precautionary measure.
