Upton: General Motors cooperating with U.S. House investigation

Congressman Fred Upton, (R) St. Joseph

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WKZO) -- Congressman Fred Upton says General Motors is working with his committee in the House as they investigate problems with ignition switches that has resulted in at least 13 deaths.

The issue dates back over a decade, which Upton and others on Capitol Hill find extremely troubling because a simple procedure appears to have been ignored. The St. Joseph Republican says had engineers simply renumbered the part that was changed in the ignition housing, a lot of the problems might have been avoided.

GM CEO Mary Barra testified before Upton’s Energy and Commerce Committee on Tuesday and a U.S. Senate committee on Thursday.
