COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, the warm weather on Saturday was perfect timing at the end of spring break week for tournament action for Coldwater baseball and Bronson softball. Coldwater hosted their annual Southern Michigan Bank & Trust Invitational and the Cardinals had a 2-and-1 record on the day. Coldwater was defeated by Hamilton 7-5 before beating Whiteford 15-8 and Cheboygan 9-6. Jordan Butler took the loss for the Cardinals against Hamilton while at the plate, Brady Duke, Austin Krzeminski, and Brandon Lewis each had two hits with two rbi’s for Buke and a solo home run for Krzeminski. In the Whiteford win, Randall Linton earned the victory in relief, allowing one run over 3-and-two-thirds innings. Krzrminski had a double, a homer and 3 rbi’s while Brendan Spangler had a single and double and 2 rbi’s. And in the victory over Cheyboygan, Martin Johnson picked up the win in relief while Ryan Mock had 2 hits and 4 rbi’s. The Cardinals improved to 4-and-1 with their next games scheduled for tomorrow, weather permitting, with a doubleheader at home against Gull Lake and if they play, we’ll have live coverage on the radio with the broadcast joining the twin-bill in progress around 5:30 following the Evening Journal.
In softball, Bronson opened their season with a 2-1 record at the Comstock Invitational. They started the day with a 2-1 win over Buchanan. Skyler Sobeski went the distance, scattering eight hits with 1 walk and 4 strikeouts. Kelsey Robinson had 2 singles while Liz Baker had a double. Bronson then beat Parchment 9-7 in eight innings. Lindsey Sikorski was the winning pitcher, going all the way with 7 strikeouts and 3 earned runs allowed. Sobeski had 2 doubles and a single while Hannah Hoover had 3 singles and two rbi’s. Sikorski helped her own cause with a single and a double and an rbi. The Lady Vikings finished the tournament with a 1-0 loss to Coloma. Sobeski suffered the defeat with 4 innings on the mound with 4 strikeouts and one walk while giving up 4 singles. Hoover had a pair of singles. Next up for Bronson is a road game tomorrow at Centreville.
On today’s high school schedule, in girl’s soccer, Coldwater looks to begin its season at Jonesville with the j-v match at 4 o’clock and the varsity to follow at 5:30. And in boy’s golf, Bronson has a St. Joe Valley Jamboree at the St. Joe Valley Golf Club.
