LANSING, MI (WTVB) - Governor Rick Snyder Tuesday signed legislation designed to speed up adoptions. He signed three bills that he says will help avoid unnecessary delays in the process, encouraging a smooth transition. One of the measures was sponsored by State Representative Ken Kurtz of Coldwater. It would give more parental rights to unwed birth fathers. Another bill would cut the time needed to finalize the adoption for a child under 1-year-old from 6 to 3 months.
Some critics say the bills reduce the options for birth parents, giving them less time and opportunity to make up their minds and get good advice about keeping their children.
