LANSING, MI (WTVB) - The state House is debating a plan devised by Speaker Jase Bolger to provide another $500 million a year for road work by 2018. Bolger's proposal wipes out the current tax on gasoline and diesel fuel and replaces it with a 6% tax on the wholesale price. That won't save us any money at current prices, and will actually increase what's paid at the pump as fuel prices rise. Another measure included in the package of bills ensures taxes and fees collected that are meant for roads will be required to be spent for that purpose only.
