LANSING, MI (WTVB) - Battle Creek’s Mark Schauer turned in 27,000 petition signatures on Friday so he will qualify for the ballot in the Governor's race this year. About the only thing he shares with the incumbent is that they both come from the Cereal City. Schauer strongly disagrees with Rick Snyder on most other things, particularly education funding and the senior tax. He shrugged off reports that he is slightly behind in the polls, observing that just 44% of the state's registered voters turned out for the 2010 election, which Snyder won.
Just as soon as the Secretary of State's office reviews his petitions, Schauer will be the Democratic candidate for Governor. No others are expected to surface between now and next week's filing deadline.
