DETROIT, MI (WTVB) - The Tigers escaped with an 8-6 win over the White Sox last night as Detroit and Chicago have split the first two games of this 4 game set at Comerica Park. The White Sox had the tying run to the plate in the ninth after being down five runs entering the inning, but Joba Chamberlain got the final out after issuing a walk and notched his first save of the season.
The Tigers pounded out 15 hits in the victory including a 2-run homer and a double for Miguel Cabrera, who had been 4-for-23 on this home stand. Justin Verlander moved to 3-and-1 with seven innings of two-run ball with Detroit improving its record to 10-7. Drew Smyly gets the start tonight for the Tigers against the White Sox.
The Chicago Cubs beat Arizona 9-2 last night at Wrigley Field giving them back-to-back wins for the first time this season.
And Albert Pujols is the newest member of the 500 home run club. The Los Angeles Angels first baseman connected for a two-run shot at Washington in the fifth inning of a 7-2 win over the Nationals. He also hit a three-run blast in the first inning, making him the first player to collect his 499th and 500th homers in the same game. The 34-year-old Pujols is the 26th member of the exclusive club and the third-youngest to reach the mark. Ex-Tiger Gary Sheffield was the last to reach the plateau back in 2009.
