UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, in track and field, it was the Union City Invitational on Saturday with 7 schools competing, including Quincy. In the boys and girls meets, Union City finished second with Quincy third. Concord took home the title on the boys side while Reading won the girls meet. Gold medal winners for the boys included Union City’s Evan Cross in the discus and Aaron Watson in the 100 meter dash. For the girl’s, from Union City, Kaitlyn Mitchell won the shot put and Katie Birch the 800 meter run, while finishing first in the 32-hundred meter relay was the team of Katie Birch, Rachel Sutherland, Cassie Thorpe, and Haley McIntosh. The winners from Quincy were Alyssa Bracy in 32-hundred meter run and Kayti Hawkins in the discus.
In softball, Quincy had a 1-2 record at the Hanover Horton Invitational. They opened with a 7-2 loss to Hanover Horton and then defeated Grace Christian 7-6 before losing 13-6 to Kalamazoo Loy Norrix. Freshman Hannah Economou pitched each game for the Orioles and against Grace Christian, she had 11 strikeouts and also had a home run and 2 doubles along with 4 rbi’s. Kati Newberry added 3 hits. Economou also had a home run against Hanover Horton while in the Loy Norrix game, she had 8 strikeouts with a double. Quincy’s record on the season is 3-and-10.
In junior varsity softball, Coldwater finished first in their invitational tournament. They started the day with a 17-1 win over Sturgis with a no-hitter for Sierra Wolfcale with 6 strikeouts and 3 walks. On offense, Gabby Milnes had 3 singles and Payton Watson added a triple and a single. Coldwater then defeated Adrian 7-2 in the title game. Stacy Guzy was the winning pitcher on a 2-hitter with 13 strikeouts. Watson and Kaitlyn Gallant each had 2 singles. Coldwater’s record is now 9-2.
In Junior Varsity baseball, it was the Coldwater Cardinal Invitational with the Cardinals finishing in first place with a 3-0 record on the day. Coldwater opened with a 15-0, 4-inning win over Pennfield. Addison Duda picked up the victory on the mound while Jesse Mangat had 3 hits and 5 rbi’s. The Cardinals then beat Hanover Horton 13-3 in six innings with Shane Dunn the winning pitcher. Brothers Marty and Jimmy Johnston had 3 hits and 3 rbi’s apiece with 2 triples and a double for Marty. Jake Osborne added a home run. In the title game, it was a 4-inning, 15-0 victory over Adrian. Marty Johnston earned the win with a 2-hitter. Brandon Lewis had 2 doubles and 3 rbi’s while Dunn had 2 hits with 4 runs scored. Coldwater improved its record to 14-1.
On tonight’s high school sports schedule, in girls soccer, it’s Coldwater’s annual Youth Soccer Night with the Lady Cardinals taking on Battle Creek Central at 6:45. All Branch County AYSO soccer players wearing their jerseys will have free admission with the opportunity to walk out with the team during introductions before the match. Also in girls soccer, it’s Quincy at Jonesville with a 5:30 starting time. In boy’s golf, Coldwater plays in the first round of the SMAC League meet at Island Hills while Union City competes in the Springport Jamboree at Duck Lake. And in girl’s tennis, it’s Coldwater at home against Sturgis.
