COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - Gasoline price spiked in the last 24 hours in Branch County and across the region, jumping as much as 30 cents a gallon at some locations and it’s not because gas dealers are expecting a spectacular weekend to draw you to the highways. Patrick DeHaan at Gas Buddy.Com says motorists are once again the victims of the “Speedway effect”. He says prices had dropped so low as stations compete to get you to park at their pumps, that no one was making any money. Some operator, usually Speedway, spikes the other way and all the stations follow. It’s called price cycling and while it has the net effect of price rigging, there is no collusion involved. DeHaan says the way to beat it is to study the cycles and fill up when they sink, Then, hope you don’t run out until the next down cycle. Prices should start dropping quickly.
