DETROIT (WTVB) - The Tigers got eight strong innings last night from Justin Verlander and Rajai Davis finished with two RBI’s and two runs scored as Detroit held on to beat the Colorado Rockies 4-2 in the opener of a three game series at Comerica Park.
The first place Tigers stayed four games up on the second place Royals in the Central Division after Kansas City beat the A’s 1-0 at Oakland. Verlander improved his record to 10-9 and is now 25-2 for his career against National League opponents. He allowed two runs on eight hits with 5 strikeouts and no walks. Davis broke up a scoreless game in the fifth with a two-run single which was followed by an RBI double from Ian Kinsler. After the Rockies plated a pair of runs in the seventh, Detroit added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame with a Victor Martinez RBI single.
Joe Nathan pitched the ninth for his 22nd save in 27 chances, working around a single and a walk with a fly out with two runners on wrapping up the victory.
Rick Porcello starts tonight for the Tigers against the Rockies.
The White Sox outlasted the Twins 10-8 in Chicago while the Cubs downed the Dodgers 8-2 in Los Angeles.
