New study shows very positive health trends in America

UNDATED (WTVB) - There’s a new study out on the health of Americans and it contains some very positive numbers. It shows fewer in the U.S. are being hospitalized for and dying from heart disease and stroke. The sweeping research reveals significant declines in hospital stays for heart disease and stroke over the past 15 years.  Deaths from both conditions are down as well.

Researchers analyzed records for almost 34-million people who received Medicare treatment between 1999 and 2011.  They found that hospitalization for heart attack fell by 38-percent and death from heart attack within a year of visiting the hospital fell by 23 percent. Hospitalization for stroke fell by more than 33-percent and deaths were down 13-percent.  Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S.

A report on the research is published in the journal "Circulation."
